The stories out of Russia have been worrisome of late, and today's story on The Drudge Report quotes Putin warning that "imperialism" will be fought, and the test of their latest multiple-warhead missile is the start of a new arms race. When you take into consideration the number of opposition journalists who have been killed recently, and the first ever cyber-attack by one country on another, you have to be wary of the bear again.
Although there is no definitive proof as yet, the cyber-attack on Estonia is of concern, regardless of the perpetrator. The United Nations and NATO are both conducting investigations, but there's little doubt that the dispute over a WWII statue was what prompted the Russians to react. Murder with a very exotic, radioactive element kills off one critic, and another is murdered in the streets. No arrests on the in-country killing, and a refusal to cooperate with the investigators in Great Britain.
Mr. Putin, like Fidel and Fidel Jr., was elected by the people. Fidel never stepped down; Mr. Putin has said he will, and Fidel Jr. will probably go out feet first.
I have to wonder if the bickering and deep divisions within this country are not making it seem like a great time for every two-bit Saddam-want-to-be to come crawling from under the stones? Putin is obviously running up tensions in an effort to distract the world from the murders that he ordered, and the assualt on Russian democracy. "Please be sure to watch my left hand so you can't see what my right is doing, and then .... voila .... dictatorships arise in Russia and Venezuela, continue in Cuba, and the Islamic terrorists sit back and just laugh.
Why are they laughing? Simple - their ultimate goal is to eliminate anyone who is not a Muslim. Democracy or dictatorship makes no difference to them; they simply enjoy watching the infidels kill each other off.
It would behoove Russia to stop being so damned paranoid about us, and start worrying about their own Muslim fanatics.
One other thing - do you notice what all of these jerks have in common? Oil, and the money it generates. Russia has huge reserves of oil and especially gas, Venezuela's petro-dollars bought Hugo his fame, and unless I'm mistaken, there aren't a hell of a lot of democracies anywhere in the Middle East, other than Israel, and now Iraq.
If that isn't a wake-up call for energy independence I don't know what is.
